Story Recs: Evolving Sookie

While we do enjoy a Sookie who is firmly in charge of herself and any power she may possess (and we have featured just that theme before, You can find it HERE), there is something wonderful about joining along with Sookie on that difficult journey of self-discovery. Eric may be the reason or the support that takes her there, but ultimately a Sookie who grows into her own is a sight to behold. We consider ourselves fortunate to have had so many stories from which to choose championing a Sookie along on this path.

Sookie, Interrupted by JanofArc

What if Sookie had been put in the looney bin? She’s young, she hears voices, her parents took her to doctors yet there’s never a mention of one coming close to a diagnosis. This is what I think would have happened if a doctor had managed to convince Sookie’s Parent’s she was schizophrenic, but she’s not in the nut house forever – she gets discovered by Hadley and Sophie-Ann! AU, E/S, rated M, -COMPLETE-

An action-packed AU story where Sookie’s parents who do not get killed in the flood when she is a child, commit her to a mental institution at sixteen. In this story, we encounter a vulnerable, but pragmatic Sookie who, after struggling with her telepathy throughout her childhood, is attempting to survive in an institution that only seem to add to the ‘voices’ in her head. In spite of this dire premise, “Sookie, Interrupted” swiftly jumps to a time when Sookie is rescued from the facility by a vampire Hadley and her Maker, Queen Sophie-Ann. From there, it sets off on a mostly fun-filled ride full of adventures as Sookie grows, and she is a quick learner, as a person and as a Telepath, navigating Supernatural politics with unexpected prowess. As for the romance topic, let’s just say that when Eric is appointed to protect the Telepath, he takes to it as a duck to water…

Hey, they may be human but they're still our Eric and Sookie!

Change Me by MissyDee

Sookie is overweight and ready to change her physical appearance, Eric is a personal trainer and doesn’t realize he needs to change his view of life and women. This is how they come together and help each other change into the people they’re meant to be. AH, E/S, rated M, -COMPLETE-

As the summary above implies, this is a story of Sookie making a conscious decision to evolve and change for herself and for those who depend on her- to be stronger, to live longer, and be happy in her own skin. Her story is one so true to real life that it’s almost uncomfortable, familiar, and overwhelming to many of us who have been or are in the same place as her though ultimately, you can’t help but want to see her triumph. As with any evolution, there is an ecosystem surrounding you that can’t go unaffected. Eric is the personal trainer who has been assigned to Sookie at the local gym and, suffice it to say, he isn’t thrilled over it. Eric has never felt the need to be anything other than the superficial, self-centered, arrogant playboy he has always been, that is, up until he finds the beauty in his new client that has nothing to do with her exterior wrapping, but everything to do with the entire package. A truly engaging, fun, and honest story that champions change, not just in one character, but in all those surrounding her.

Getaway by MySecretO

Eric takes Sookie on vacation, and it changes everything. Lots of goodness, some quick, some slow, some taboo. No angst, just love and happy ever after. Set after the 10th book. E/S, rated MA, -COMPLETE-

If we had to come up with a tagline, we’d probably go with the following, ‘So hot it might burn your fingers, ”Getaway” by MySecretO, ‘A smutfest with a purpose.’
Sookie, and possibly some readers, has a sexual awakening as she comes to accept her relationship with Eric. Our couple starts out in a fairly happy place, but that doesn’t mean Sookie doesn’t have room to grow, in fact, that sense of stability gives her the necessary confidence. By taking a holiday together, we get to see the couple interact without any outside influences or concerns. Sookie matures in the exploration of her own body as well as Eric’s, expanding her boundaries into areas which might be considered taboo. That said, we still don’t lose out on any tender moments or plot just because Sookie and Eric happen to be going at it like rabbits, which is, admittedly, most of the time. By the end of their vacation, Sookie is seemingly happy and secure in their relationship, and most importantly, herself. Still she has some learning left to do when it comes to accepting her life with Eric in the reality of the everyday. As Sookie herself says, she evolves from the girl who “had been so stubborn and downright prissy when it came to Eric,” to the woman we know is worthy of our leading man, despite knowing that life with Eric “would be full of happiness, love, and a lot of really good sex.” Now if you do find yourself wishing for more, don’t miss the sequel, “La Vie En Rose!”

The angst oh the angst... it's a miracle we still have fingernails left.

We Who Are Alive and Remain by Kilara25

Terrified by changes she witnesses in herself, Sookie hides from the world and everyone in it. When Eric wrests her secret from her, she will either find that he is worthy of her trust-or she’ll be dead. E/S, rated M, -COMPLETE-

That Sookie has become ‘more’ is as inexplicable to her as the fact that she was born a telepath in the first place. She sinks into deep depression while she tries to come to terms with the changes and the dire choices that appear to be left open to her. As Sookie withdraws and closes down, Eric, deeply in love with her, tries to find a way into the seemingly impenetrable shell she is hiding within so that he can determine just what is occurring and what he might be able to do regarding it. In only seven chapters, Kilara25 creates a poignant portrayal of the intricate path between vulnerability and trust both Eric and Sookie must walk as they work their way through misunderstandings, false assumptions, and personal sacrifices in order to take the chance on a life together where trust is put to the ultimate test. A beautiful and emotional read that’s definitely worth the small injection of angst.

For a limited time only morrgy has been kind enough to reopen her wp site (MORGGYS.WORDPRESS.COM) to allow those who missed the chance to download her stories the last time to do so now until november 30th when she will close down the site PERMANENTLY.

Thank you so much for this list! I’m just “calming down” after the semester. Teaching is a “normal” job until the end of the quarter. Then it’s like 70 hours per week! But then it calms down. I’m so happy to be able to get a rest and will be reading/re-reading these stories as my life settles down for a bit.

    Some thoughts:
First of all, once upon a time, I started a spreadsheet to keep track of all the stories I’ve ever read so that I would “remember” whether I would go back and reread them. There are 1612 stories on my spreadsheet!!!! Anyway, I say all this so that I can tell you that one of the stories recommended above is among my “highest ranked” stories.
It is: We Who Are Alive and Remain–This story “struck” me. And I can’t wait to re-read it.
That said, Sookie, Interrupted is also very high on my list and is among the stories I marked with a RA (which is my abbreviation for “read again!”). It has a very original plot!
Change Me used to be on my “read again” list too! And then I read it again. So now it’s on my RAA list (read again again). The Sookie in the story is beautiful no matter what she looks like!
As for Getaway, I somehow have missed it!!!!! However, now that I know it exists and is complete? I can’t wait!

Currently, I’m re-reading an EricIzMine story called “Euro Pass.” It too contains an evolving Sookie, so I’m already priming myself to hit this list!

Thanks to all the recommenders for your hard work! I’m so sorry that I didn’t offer you thanks before now, but I was swamped, and WordPress keeps “kicking” me out so I have to resubscribe (that’s the only bad thing about WP in my opinion). Anyway, I very much appreciate your efforts in contributing to our fan base.
